Drawing Challenges: Fishers of People

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19)

Drawing #1:

One of my favorite shows is The Chosen, a multi-season series about the life of Jesus of Nazareth. In one scene, Jesus asks two fishermen if they want to be His first disciples. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19). I was originally inspired to put a circle of felt fish on some projection-fabric I had in my room. Then, wondering how I was going to use the screen projector itself, I made a graphic on Canva with the background of the Sea of Galilee (where Jesus called his first disciples). The two fishermen, Simon and Andrew, immediately leave their fishing boat and follow Jesus.

The call of Jesus to Simon and Andrew are to "fish for people." Jesus used the context of their occupation, fishing, to point them to His new job for them: living like Him to spread the Gospel. I had fish cut from felt available from my first attempt at Drawing #1, and I experimented with writing out "Go fish" with the fish on my desk and dorm wall. One of my friends had the idea of putting it up on the lounge bulletin board, which had available space. Putting up something I had made for everyone to see anonymously made me think of how artists who create in public spaces feel: kind of excited for people to see it and wonder what they would think (and wondering if I would get into trouble for it or not).

Does anyone remember playing Go Fish as a kid? It was one of my favorite card games growing up--and it connects with Matthew 4:19 when Jesus tells His followers to "fish for people." This hand of playing cards invites viewers to do what Jesus said.

This book was given to me today at work by my boss, Leslie. I had told her about my project and she was super excited to give me one of these old textbooks from the school's basement! I crossed out the original title with black paint and, noticing the boat on the cover, I decided to make the new title, "Come, follow Me." The women on the cover are like followers of Jesus, and the wind that makes the boat go is the Holy Spirit. The boat needs a captain who knows where to go, and that person is Jesus!

This drawing is inspired by the intro scene of The Chosen. The white fish are larger to emphasize those who are following a different way than the other fish.
